I have always had an interest in history. My interest in history went beyond simple memorization of dates and wars and monumental events. My passion in history included a great interest in fashion. I have always been curious as to how fashions came to be and how they evolved throughout the years. My passion for fashion was so intense that I actually considered majoring in fashion design in college before deciding on something more practical – costume and dress creation.
I began making dresses and other outfits while majoring in Theater at Kent State University in Ohio. While pursuing this degree I made costumes and dresses for both main stage and dance productions, some of which were featured in shows on Broadway. I also made costumes and dresses for shows which required period pieces such as Shakespearian, Greek and Roman, Australian aboriginal, Victorian, roaring 20’s, 1930’s and 1940’s, as well as 1970’s. I began making clothing for Civil War dresses, Renaissance clothing, wedding dresses, Elizabethan, Baroque and Victorian dresses, as well as the occasional kilt, about 2001. In all, I have over 12 years experience making outfits for women, men, and children, including toddlers.
One thing which I feel makes me unique is that I make Renaissance clothing for myself and my friends. As such, I receive a lot of constructive criticism about how the outfits feel, how comfortable they are and how to make them durable. Truthfully, I am my own worst critic. I want my dresses to be comfortable, easy to manage, and have some longevity to them. As such, I pride myself in creating sturdy clothing that can be used as actual garments worn with regularity as well as Halloween costumes or as seasonal Ren Faire dresses.
